The Story
It started in a shed.
In 2020, when the world shut down, Jane Ellington started teaching Pilates and yoga out of the shed in her backyard.
There were three or four spots. Classes were small because they had to be. People came because they wanted to move, but they stayed because they found something they hadn't realized they were missing: community.
That little backyard studio became The Shed.
And eventually, the shed got too small.
A new chapter.
In 2024, the opportunity to move into a real studio on Lafayette Street came along.
Jane partnered with Phebe, and The Shed moved into the space we know today.
The building gave us more room, but the original idea stayed the same: small classes, exceptional teaching, and a place where people actually know each other.
We've grown since then. Our team has grown. Our classes have evolved. Our understanding of strength and movement continues to change.
But we still believe the best workouts are the ones where someone is paying attention.
What the Shed became.
The Shed isn't classical Pilates. It isn't a traditional gym. It's our own method.
We teach Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates, and Mat Strength, using resistance in different ways to build strength, control, coordination, and body awareness.
We're interested in the parts of Pilates that work, the parts of strength training that work, and the space where those things overlap.
We don't think movement needs to be complicated to be effective. We don't think you need to destroy yourself to have a good workout. And we definitely don't think fitness should make your life smaller.
Fitness should make your life bigger.
That's the idea that has stayed with us from the backyard shed to Lafayette Street.
Come work hard. Get stronger. Learn something about your body.
Then go live your life.
